Gas Stations and Car Repair Shops
Let's face it: If we have a car it's going to need gas and it's going to need repairs. As harmless as these things may seem, they have their dangers as well. Here are some tips on staying safe.
* From time to time you'll need to stop for gas at night. If you have to put fuel in your tank at night, find a gas station that is well lit and located at a major intersection. Also try to pump your gas with a nozzle that will position you so you're visible from the intersection. The more light on you and the more traffi c moving around you, the safer you're going to be. If you can't find a place that is visible to the intersection then find a pump in front of the attendant's booth.
* After you enter your card information, put the nozzle in the car and when the gas begins to flow get back into the car and lock the doors. When the tank is full, check your surroundings, get out of the car, remove the nozzle, put the cap on as quickly as possible, take your receipt and get back in the car. Don't forget to lock the doors.
* Never, ever, leave your purse in an unlocked car if you have to go inside the gas station. If you're like most of us, you'll grab your debit card, shut the car door, and turn away to fill the tank. The problem: Our wallets are in the car and someone could easily open the door, reach in, grab our purse and drive away â this would only take a few seconds. Make a habit of locking your car doors, even if you're only turning your back for a moment.
* Whenever you have to leave your car with a mechanic, don't leave your house key on the ring with your car key. Most mechanics keep a file of your personal information. That means they'd have your address and your house key. You don't want to see what your mechanic might do with that kind of temptation.
